Accounting
for Lean at MarquipWardUnited
Jerry Solomon & Rosemary
Fullerton
MarquipWardUnited, a division of Barry-Wehmiller,
is located in Hunt Valley, Maryland. The
plant produces large, complex packaging
equipment for the corrugated box industry.
Jerry Solomon, VP of Operations, and
Rosemary Fullerton, Associate Professor of
Accounting at Utah State University, will
discuss their experiences in making the
transition at MarquipWardUnited from
standard costing to lean cost management.
Solomon, the Shingo Award winner for his
Lean accounting novel Who’s Counting?, is a
well-known advocate for lean thinking and
popular seminar presenter on lean
accounting. Fullerton worked with Solomon at
MarquipWardUnited during her year-long
sabbatical investigating lean accounting
systems. This case study will provide
first-hand insight into the nuances of a
complex accounting system transition
involving a machine shop and custom assembly
operation. The exact process, the benefits,
and the pitfalls of the transition will be
explored. Much of this material is detailed
in Solomon and Fullerton’s Shingo Prize
winning book, Accounting for World Class
Operations.
